Right Cross in Boxing
In boxing, one of the most important punches is the aptly named the Cross. The reason why this punch is regarded highly is simply because the boxer can generate a lot of power quickly. If this punch connects clearly and with full power it usually results in a knockout. This punch is normally thrown with the rear hand and is usually set up after the Jab.
The correct way to throw the Cross is when one is in the boxing guard. The punch is thrown straight at the target with the rear hand. In order to generate maximum power, one has to extend the shoulders all the way. These both maximize distance and power. During the punch the other hand has to retract to protect the chin. For more power, the body and hips are turned clockwise (depending which way you are standing in Guard position) as the punch is thrown. Weight is also transferred from the rear foot to the lead foot, resulting in the rear heel turning outwards as it acts as a fulcrum for the transfer of weight. Body rotation and the quick weight transfer is what gives the cross its knockout potential. This punch has been considered to be the most effective strike in terms of knocking out an opponent. The physics behind the execution of this punch makes it devastating and quick. |
