Boxing Jab

The jab is considered one of the most important punches in the sport of boxing. When a boxer is in his stance, in order to execute the jab effectively he has to have one foot in front of the other. When the punch is thrown straight with the lead hand  and extended out and retracted quickly it is refereed to as a Jab. From all the punches in boxing, the jab is arguably the most often known one. Some boxing experts argue that the jab is the single most significant punch in boxing. The reason given is that it keeps the opponent of balance as well as enabling you to set up punches.

The boxing Jab is a  straight, arm-length punch thrown with the lead hand. It is used for a number of purposes. Firstly, the jab can be used defensively; through its speed of execution and reach, one can keep the opponent at distance, avoiding him from charging in, stunning him with a jab to the nose or eye. In addition to the latter the Jab can also be used offensively to set up other punches such as the Hook Uppercut or more commonly the Right Cross. The Jab is  mainly thrown to the face or the head, but jabs to the stomach have been used. The Jab to the stomach is less common as it leaves you open to dangerous counters.

The basic principle behind the Jab is to get  your opposition away from his rhythm and simultaneously  it will allow you to set your own combinations.
