BJJ Arm Locks In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ( BJJ) Armlocks can be defined as a single or double joint manipulation that hyperextend the elbow, wrist or shoulder. Armlocks that hyperextend the shoulder are referred to shoulder locks and those that extend the elbow are referred to as elbow locks. Both techniques come under the category of Armlocks. Some of Armlock techniques; have a duel effect on both the shoulder and the elbow. This however is dependant the flexibility of the opponent. In order to successfully execute an arm bar, there is a pre-requisite that the one applying the lock uses leverage to his advantage. This is very important as failure to do so would result in the technique failing. It is becouse of this that most arm locks are effective when fighting from the ground. These techniques can be initiated from position such as the Side Mount, Guard, or the Mount. Failure to execute such techniques without proper position and leverage will result in your opponent escaping.
