Chokes and Neck Cranks

There are numerous techniques that can be used in both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ( BJJ ) and MMA competitions. Some these techniques can be referred to as Chokes and Cranks.

BJJ Chokes are basically any move that restricts or strangles the persons airways so that it stopped the blood supply to the brain. This usually results in a "tap" or unconsciousness. BJJ Chokes are used by various martial artist and styles, combat sports and self defence courses. Unlike most techniques in self defence where one has to use a lot of strength, the BJJ chokes can be applied effectively by anyone as log as they use the correct leverage. There are two types of Chokes, Air Chokes and Blood Chokes.

Air Chokes work by blocking latitude airway thus interfering with ones breathing, and leading to asphyxiation. The Blood Choke works by stopping the blood circulation to the brain. This is done through placing pressure on both sides of the carotid arteries. A few of BJJ Chokes include the Trainagle Choke, Guillotine Choke, Anaconda Choke and the Arm Triangle:

A Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Neck Crank is a spinal lock targeted to spinal region by causing, hyper-flexion. This is achieved through twisting, bending or elongating. An example of a Neck Crank is what is referred to as a "Can Opener". The utilization of Neck Cranks is common in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Competitions and MMA Events. However, in some competitions they are banned outright. A few examples of BJJ Cranks include the Can Opener, Twister, Spine Crank and the Crucifix:

All in all both Chokes and Cranks are highly effective moves in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu which can be applied effectively in BJJ tournaments and MMA competitions.
