Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Rear Naked Choke

Video Coming Soon!

Rear naked choke or RNC is applied from the opponent's back in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or any other martial art. This choking technique is arm based technique in which either arm can be used. This term is originated in jiu-jitsu or judo from the technique "Hadaka Jime" which means naked strangle. The word naked is used in the context that you do not need to wear a training uniform to learn this strangulation technique. This is often referred to as shoulder on shoulder technique and it is the safest and most commonly taught judo technique in jiu-jitsu.

In Brazilian jiu-jitsu which is a grappling martial art, RNC is a fundamental choking technique. Choking someone from rear mount is the most effective tool in the jiu-jitsu art. The rear naked choke is simple to use when locked. When done effectively, it can cause unconsciousness temporarily. In this technique, the attacker’s arm entangles the opponent's neck, with the opponent's windpipe at the elbow curve. The attacker's one hand then grasps his own upper opposite arm (biceps region). The opposite hand is placed behind the opponent's head. The elbows are then brought together such that pressure is applied to the opponent’s neck from both sides. These are applied under two variations of rear naked choke version.

Rear naked choke has a direct impact on arteries because it is considered as a blood choke. It is used in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and is the most common method to win the match in mixed martial art techniques.
