Fabricio Werdum

Fabricio Werdum is a mixed martial arts fighter who resides in Brazil. Fabricio is regarded amongst the top ten fighters in the heavyweight division. This is mainly because he has beaten some of the best fighters in the world. He has highly regarded wins over fighters such as Gabriel Gonzaga, Alexsander Emelianenko, and Alistair Overeem. As a young kid, he was considered as being hyperactive. What is unusual is that he was living alone in Brazil at the age of 15. Some have argued that these circumstances made him very independent and gave him his strong character.

Fabricio initiated his training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after his girl friend at the time recommended it. Apprehensively he took her advice. After participating in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu he fell n love with the art, and started to practice 8 hours a day under Marcio Corletta in the Porto Alegre Academy. He has stated that he is the best friend of Mario Reis since childhood and coincidently started training at the same time. After numerous victories in BJJ and submission wrestling competitions he started his mixed martial arts career.

Fabricio Werdum started his mma career at the events such as Jungle Fight, Millennium Brawl, and World Absolute Fight. He had five fights in these events and he lost one and won the other four. One of the wins was over the highly regarded Gabriel Gonzaga.
His big break came when he started fighting in Pride Fighting Championships (Pride FC). His debut fight was against Tom Erickson who he beat by a submission. This was followed up by another victory when he beat Roman Zentsov also by a submission. He went on to fight a number of other fighter in Pride whom he also beat. Some of these fighters include the highly regarded Muay Thai Boxer Alistair Overeem. Following this he fought the BJJ World Champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira; this was mainly a stand up fight where both fighters used their boxing skills. However he lost this fight which went the distance and the decision was given to Nogueria.

Fabricio Werdum made his debut UFC 70: Nations Collide where he fought Andrei Arlovski. The match was considered fairly boring as both fighters were unwilling to engage. It was more of a Muay Thai match that no action. Majority of the fight stayed standing up and Werdum was unable to utilize his BJJ skills. The fight went to the judge’s score cards and a decision was handed to Arlovski.

It can be argued that Fabricio Werdum is a top level mixed martial arts fighter. However if he is to further progress in the MMA Rankings and be considered for title contention he needs to bring a more well rounded game.
