Georges St Pierre

For those who follow mixed martial arts, GSP is a familiar name. It refers to one of the most successful fighters in the history of the game, Georges St Pierre. This MMA fighter has achieved great success in his profetional career spanning less than a  decade and has also reached the peak point for a person in a fighting arena. The Canadian practitioner of mixed martial arts is also the world champion. He is considered to be the best mma fighter in the world in the welterweight division.

The initiation of this inspiring career can be said more out of necessity rather than one via choice. During his childhood days in school Georges was often dominated by his seniors and classmates. This was responsible for him getting to learn the various skills of martial arts, that when he started learning the techniques of karate. All this happened when he was just at the tender age of six.  And all this started was to tackle a boy who used to bully Georges at school. But unfortunately after the death of his karate teacher, he started learning the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This wasa turning point in his martial arts career as it allowed him to navihate towards mixed martial arts.

St. Pierre has been in the limelight since he was at the age of 16, when he turned tables on a fighter who was nearly double his age and the victory too came with a convincing knock out. The astonishing part of the match was not only the age difference but also the styles of fighting, while St. Pierre was just an amateur karate fighter his opponent was a skilled boxer and it was his strong kicks that got him the victory and a place in fighting history. His first professional bout was against Ivan Mejivar and not to the amusement of his followers it turned out to be a first round knockout victory for St. Pierre.

This was followed by a series of victories and finally leading to St. Pierre reaching the stage of UFC, making a debut against Karo Parisyan and as his record had been he went on to win the fight, though only by decision. His next victory comes against Jai Hieron whom he was able to tame in a mere one minute forty two seconds. This gave him a title shot against Matt Hughes for the welterweight title.  It was one of the most memorable fights ending with St. Pierre losing out only a fraction before the end time when he had to tap out to a submission move. This was a setback but was not to stop Georges form achieving his ultimate goal. After a series of very strong performances he again got a chance to regain glory which he could not capitalise, due to groin injury.

And after all the efforts and hardships revenge happened and St. Pierre defeated Matt Hughes for the title. His reign was brought to an end only by the strikes of Matt Serra. However this was avenged with a re-match with Serra which GSP won convincinngly. This was followed by a victory over Jon Fitch for his first title defense.
