Greco Roman Wrestling Fighters

One of the three styles of amateur wrestling that is still utilized in the Olympic Games is the Greco Roman style of wrestling. Essentially, Greco Roman wrestling is derived from the Ancient Greeks and during ancient times, it as practiced by the Roman soldiers. Attacks below the waist are strictly forbidden and this distinguishes it from other styles of wrestling. UFC Hall of Famers, Randy Couture and Dan Severn are considered as two prominent Mixed Martial Arts practitioners with a Greco Roman background. In addition, though he never entered into MMA competition, Russia's Alexander Karelin should be mentioned, basically because he's the best Greco-Roman heavyweight practitioner in the history of the sport (a three time gold medallist).

Randy Duane Couture is a Greco-Roman wrestler, folkstyle wrestler, and specialized in mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter. He holds the current Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Champion and an affiliate member of the UFC Hall of Fame. He is the just  the only athlete to have held championship titles together with the heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions of the UFC, in addition to the only five-time champion in UFC history, earning him the nicknames "The Natural" and, later, "Captain America". He, alongside with Robert Follis, once headed Team Quest, a camp of fighters based out of Gresham, Oregon. In 2005, Couture moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he presently resides. He moved out of Team Quest recently and he has opened new gyms called Extreme Couture, located in Las Vegas, Vancouver, Washington, and Wellington, Florida. He now trains at his Las Vegas gym. Couture lived in Corvallis, Oregon right through most of his professional career. He also served as a subordinate wrestling coach and strength and conditioning coach for Oregon State University. Even though he is more generally recognized as a clinch-fighter, Couture's preferred method of offence in mixed martial arts competition is what is commonly referred to as 'ground and pound', in which a fighter uses his wrestling ability to take his opponent down to the mat, establishing top position, and successively striking the opponent. Due to his wrestling background, Couture spent six years boxing in the Army. He displayed a variety of skills in both May Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and has submitted two opponents using different chokeholds.

Dan Severn from Coldwater, Michigan main choices in fighting styles are Greco-Roman and Freestyle wrestling. In High School he won National Champion twice and set eight national records. He was acknowledged and accepted into Arizona State University where he was admitted into the ASU's Wrestling Hall of Fame by the time he graduated. He has also been a member in the past with the Sunkist Kids and has coached for both Arizona State and Michigan State. Between 1976 and 1992 he achieved 112 official victories by pins and holds nearly 70 national and international titles. Despite his old-time fame, Severn remains a very humble individual and keeps active within his hometown of Coldwater. Feeling that athletics is a great past-time for children he considers being a role-model and is often heard giving them advice such as "Not only do you require building a strong body, but you must also build a strong mind to enhance it".
