Matt Serra
Martial arts is an art that has various forms, people more often than not relate it to something they know or have heard off. The art is in existence across the globe in the form of karate, judo, kung fu, jiu-jitsu etc. All these forms of martial arts when brought under a common roof or when applied simultaneously the term mixed martial arts came into existence. A name that has become synonymous to fighting and mixed martial arts today is Matt Serra. Based in the US, this fighter has a great story that has brought him in the lime light and made him a success. Currently the undisputed UFC welterweight champion, Matt Serra started of very young when he began learning the art of kung fu. He further shifted focus the Brazilian art of martial arts, popularly referred as Jiu-Jitsu. His first success was in the year 1999 when he went on to win his first major tournament. In the same year running, he also secured the 2nd runner up spot in the world championship. His progress chart has always shown an upward trend and this has inspired him to be one of the most respected name in the mixed martial arts industry. This impressive record and his aggressive style of fighting have got him the nick name "The Terror". He became one of the first Americans to achieve a black belt under Gracie. Today, along with his brother Nick, who also is a black belt in a disciple of martial arts, Matt runs a couple of Jiu-Jitsu gymnasiums in New York. Both of them are two of the most respected coaches/ instructors across the globe. They not only train the professionals to participate in the various events and matches occurring but have also started academies to educate and teach people the Brazilian art form of martial arts. Their academies not only are imparting the teachings of martial arts to all but have also helped in taking the sport to the masses and popularizing its existence. Their specialties include the art of grappling and mixed martial arts. A big moment did come in his career when Matt participated in the fourth series of the Ultimate fighter, The series was aptly titled as Ultimate Fighter 4: The Comeback, the show proved to be a huge success with an unbelievable story of Matt Serra. Not only Matt against all odds went ahead to defeat the likes of Chris Lytle in the finale to be crowned the winner but also got an opportunity to test his metal against the then world champion Georges St. Pierre. Matt till then had won many a hearts and accolades but still was an under dog against the world champion. This was the fight that could throw Serra into limelight and after being rescheduled over a period of time, but the day finally did arrive. And did he deliver, on the D-day Matt did what was expected on him but ironically not on that day. The world saw the emergence of a new champion and that too with a knock out victory. Once he won the championship, the rest as they say is history. |
