MUAY THAI PUNCHES

As with most martial arts, the punch is considered the basic of Muay Thai Boxing techniques and as such is usually used to set up other attacks. Because of the punch being the easiest technique to execute, the usage of the knees and elbows usually precedes a punch. An efficient Muay Thai Boxer will almost execute the punch so that the knuckles hit the target. . In Thai Boxing it does not necessarily state which part should make contact but it is the accepted norm that punching with knuckles is the most constructive.

Executing an effective punch is a result of the entire body working in perfect synchronization. When a punch is thrown it should usually involve the twisting of the heels, the turn of the hips and the turn of the shoulder. This is necessary as it maximizes the power in the punch that is thrown. There are numerous different punches in Muay Thai Boxing which are outlined below:

In rare cases the Jab has knocked down some of the opponents who have been on the receiving end. The Jab can be practiced on focus mitts, Punch Bags and also whilst sparring. The jab is always thrown with the lead hand.

The Straight Punch: The straight punch is amongst the most powerful punches within the repertoire of a Thai Boxer. The usage of the entire body in throwing the punch increases its power and is usually aimed at the face. The Straight Punch is usually always executed after the jab. Normally, the jab is punch thrown to find the range, so it would be followed by the powerful straight punch. This is often referred to as a 1-2 combination.

The Uppercut: The uppercut punches are mainly aimed at the chin and stomach region. When one executes an uppercut there is a requirement that you should bend the knee and the elbow a bit, and then make a push up words with your fist vertically towards the target. The Uppercut punch will be used effectively when opponent is or when they are leaning forward.

The Hook: Considered as one of the most effective punches due to its ability to travel around the guard, the uppercut is a favourite amongst most combat athletes. The hook is usually targeted at the side facial area. In order to effectively execute this technique, the entire body needs to pivot the direction of the target to ensure maximum out-put of power. The hook can be executed both from the lead hand as well as the back hand.

In summation, the ppunches of Muay Thai Boxing are considered the fundamentals and as such a good grasp of the execution of these techniques will enable one to improve his game in one of the most effective hand to hand combatative sports.
