Muay Thai Stance

In Muay Thai Boxing most of the fighting is done utilizing a single stance. Each technique is implemented from this position. Slightly similar to boxing, one leg is place in front and the other is placed behind. To ensure balance there is a shoulder length gap between the two legs. The hind leg is placed behind with the foot of the rear leg facing at approximately 45 degrees away from the leading foot. The rest of the body is also turned at a 45 degree angle in conjunction with the back foot.

Some Muay Thai teachers argue that a side stance is also effective. The argument is based on the fact that a normal Muay Thai stance leaves too much of an area to be used as a target. However the problem with such a stance is that it limits the amount of techniques that one can use. In addition this stance allows you to be susceptible to the opponent’s front low Muay Thai kick. All in all the proximity between each the legs should be about shoulder-length and shoulder-width with most of the weight on the back leg.

In the Muay Thai stance the hand are held in front of the face parallel to the side of the face. This ensures that you can block techniques targeted at your face such as kicks and punches. In addition, the hands held like this allow quick execution of techniques such as Muay Thai elbows and Muay Thai punches.
