In 2002, Sherk began training and coaching to make a come back as a professional mixed martial arts fighter. He thereafter defeated Joel Blanton and then went on to fight  Georges St. Pierre, by an invitation issued by UFC. However he was defeated here by TKO. Again at the UFC 59 Nick Diaz defeated him.

Sherk made his debut with PRIDE Bushido 2 after signing with PRIDE in the year 2004. He won a fight with  Ryuki Ueyama. Thereafter he took a break for a while as he had some injuries and he needed time off to recuperate. At UFC 73 in 2007, Sherk defeated  Hermes Franca. It was rather unfortunate that both  Sherk and Franca, had been declared as positive for a test on banned steroids. This was declared by the California  Athletic Commission. He was fined, suspended and banned till next year (2008). Sherk appealed to the commission. Should he be found guilty, he will be stripped of his titles. It's rather unfortunate that things for Sean Sherk have come to this.
