Aoki holds a mixed martial arts fighter (MMA) record of 11-2, with 6 submissions and 1 TKO. He is the current Shooto Middleweight champion, he earned this title after wining against Akira Kikuchi. This was in 2006. In fact in the same year, he made his debut at with PRIDE at Bushido 12. He fought and defeated Jason Black with a triangle choke. His win was indeed very impressive. Thereafter at Bushido 13, Aoki was scheduled to fight against Gilbert Melendez. Melendez was considerd a rising star at that time, however he could not continue with the fight as he was injured during his training. And thus Aoki's opponent was changed. He was now scheduled to fight against Clay French. Aoki defeated Clay French, by a triangle choke as well. Aoki also fought and won against Joachim Hansen, lightweight fighter. Via a gogoplata, he submitted Hansen with ease. Aoki came into limelight because he used such a tactic. He is regarded as the first successful gogoplata champion at a mixed martial arts competition, as well as the first in a PRIDE FC event. With his impressive and notable win over Hansen, Aoki then fought against Kikuchi to defend his title. He was successful over here as well and won due to a split decision. He became the Shooto representative at the PRIDE Lightweight Grand Prix tournament, owing to this victory. Aoki, then fought against Brian Lo-A-Njoe, a Dutch fighter, at the PRIDE 34.
