Striking Arts in Mixed Martial Arts

There are numerous striking arts in mixed martial arts. Striking Arts can be defined as martial arts disciplines which take place when the fighters are standing up. The definition is commonly used in mixed martial when assigning techniques deployed from a stood up position, rather than techniques incorporated in ground fighting. Usually the striking arts take place when the fight starts as all fight normally start standing up. Techniques incorporated in stand-up fighting include number of strikes which include kicks and punches and also blocking techniques. Essentially all aspects of striking in MMA include combination attacks with the aim of injuring the opponent or knocking them out. In mixed martial arts the most commonly practiced striking arts include Boxing, Kickboxing and Muay Thai.

Effectiveness of Striking Arts:

Most striking arts have to understand the concept of correct distancing and timing. This is a crucial aspect as it will determine which set of techniques can be deployed and which techniques are nullified. There are three main distancing requirements.

Firstly there is the Out of Range zone. This is where the combatant is out of range of a kick or a punch. The only way one can be hit from this distance is if the opposition closes the distance. In mixed martial arts (MMA) opposition might shoot in, possibly to go for a takedown, or might close the distance to engage in Clinch fighting.

Secondly there is the kicking distance. The kicking distance is the furthest fighting position where by a consistent contact can be made with the opponent with the legs. In this particular situation the combatant usually fires kicks such as the round house kick or the front kick. In mixed martial arts the most practiced kick in this range is the Muay Thai Roundhouse.

Finally there is the punching range. This basically refers to any distance where one can strike using there fists or elbows to hurt their opponents. The furthest technique from this range in relation to the latter is the Jab Punch and the closest is the elbow or knee strike. Boxing is one striking art that solely concerns itself with only the punching distance. However within mixed  martial arts, where there is a requirement for close range fighting it is essential to be familiar will all the punching ranges as it will enable one to correctly execute techniques effectively.
