Styles of Wrestling in Mixed Martial Arts

Free Style Wrestling:

The Freestyle wrestling focuses on attacking the full body of the opposition. The Wrestlers will always start standing up, and points are gathered by taking the opponent to the floor and then exposing their back. Understanding the concepts freestyle wrestling helps the mixed martial arts fighter to learn how to expose his back, plus it forces the mixed martial artist to keep their hips down and back straight when attempting a particular takedown. The use of this style also enables the mma fighter to establish a good base.

Due to the fact that the freestyle wrestler is based on attack and exposure, by only controlling the opposition from the top position with no continuous back exposure is considered a draw, and as such both competitors are made to stand up to resume action

It must be clearly stated that Freestyle wrestling and Greco-Roman wrestling is that there is no penalty carried for poor execution of technique. Therefore if a wrestler goes for a takedown and ends up being taken down by his opposition, his opposition does not gain points.

Greco Roman wrestling:

It is a historical fact that Greco-Roman is the oldest form of wrestling style, and this style is amongst the most popular. Similar to Freestyle, the Greco-Roman wrestling style focuses on taking your opponent to the floor and thus exposing the back of their opposition. However Greco-Roman forbids the use of leg attacks. Points are accumulated for takedowns and exposures.

If one needs to learn Greco-Roman for mixed martial arts it will enable the fighter to perfect his upper body attack as well as proper hip placement and footwork. Many MMA fighters find this style to be amongst the most effective in terms of incorporating it in to mma as it allows one to attack using this style in the Clinch position.

Judo:

Judo is Japanese martial arts which have been derived from Ju Jitsu. This a Japanese style concentrates on throwing your opponent to the floor to gain a dominant position whether can be held or submitted. The Judo player will normally where a kimono which is considered an essential part Judo practice. Belts are allocated depending on proficiency and the black belt allows one to teach the style.

Folkstyle Wrestling:

Folkstyle wrestling is commonly practiced in high school and college competition in the US. This form of wrestling style was made popular in the USA, and as such is normally invisible in competition outside the USA. Folkstyle Wrestling places heavy emphasis on control, with points awarded for controlling an opponent for lengths of time longer then when under control. The one partaking in this sport must constantly work towards a pin while the wrestler on the bottom must continually try to escape or reverse. Folkstyle Wrestling has similarities to that of Freestyle Wrestling because both arts the wrestlers are stood up and attempting to secure a takedown in order to gain control. Obviously the use and practice of this art allows mixed martial artists, knowing Folkstyle enables the understanding of opposition control.
