Submission Wrestling FightersSubmission wrestling involves clinch and ground fighting where the aim is to force the opponent into submission using submission holds. It usually involves many fighting techniques like Judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, catch wrestling, sambo, shoot wrestling etc. Most often the fighters make use of more than one technique during a fight to pin down the opponent. There have been many great fighters in submission wrestling. Marcelo Garcia is one of the wrestlers in submission wrestling who specializes in Brazilian jiu jitsu. Marcelo is 25 and black belt in brazilian jiu jitsu. He is considered to be one of the best brazilian jiu jitsu exponent in the world. Five time world champion in Brazilian jiu jitsu surely backs that claim. Garcia has also won the 66-76 KG category at Abu Dhabi combat club championship 3 times in a row from 2003 to 2007. He also fought in the absolute division and was third in 2005 and second in 2007. He has been nominated as the most technical fighter twice (2003 and 2007) and given the best fight award in 2005. Fabricio Werdum is another fighter who has proved his mettle in Submission wrestling. Born in Porto Alegre, Brazil he specializes in Brazilian jiu jitsu. He won the 99+ KG category at the Abu Dhabi Combat Club Championship in 2007. He is one of the most revered fighters in the mixed martial arts technique. Roger Garcie Gomes is another Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioner who won the 2005 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Championship in absolute division. He had the feat of defeating all 8 opponents he faced by submission, which was never done before. He runs the Roger Garcie Academy in West London, England where he is the chief instructor. Dean Richard "Boogeyman" Lister was born in San Diego, California in 1976. Soon after he became a high school division wrestling champion he visited the Fabio Santos Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy and got interested in the sport. Six months into training he started competing in it. He currently holds black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He won the absolute division in 2003 at the Abu Dhabi Combat Club championship. And holds the record of defeating 4 consecutive opponents. Ricardo Arona is an exponent of Brazilian jiu jitsu, wrestling and kickboxing. He won the absolute division in Abu Dhabi Combat Club Championship in 2001 and is the only fighter to be undefeated there. He subsequently went to RINGS in Japan and won all his fights there except for the one with Fedor Emelianenko. All these fighters and many more are highly respected in the mixed martial arts sport. The most interesting fact that can be seen is that almost all the winners in the submission wrestling are exponents of Brazilian jiu jitsu. This in a way makes it clear that Brazilian jiu jitsu and ground fighting techniques are the most important techniques when it comes to mixed martial arts combat. Its no wonder then that more and more Brazilian jiu jitsu fighters are being seen in the list of best mixed martial arts fighters. |
