Types of Striking ArtsMay Thai Boxing - also referred to as Muay Thai - is an ancient martial art, which originated in Thailand close to 2000 years ago. Most people assume that other disciplines such as Teakwondo and Karate are as old as Muay Thai Boxing. However this assumption is incorrect. The actual truth is that many of these arts are only a few hundred years old. There are numerous traditional aspects surrounding Mauy Thai; for example, prior to bouts, the two fighters dance around the ring to special music. This art is often referred to as the science of "eight limbs" as one can use the Knee strikes, punches and kicks. This style is amongst the most common in mixed martial arts as it allows many techniques to be used powerfully and effectively. In addition to the latter, the Clinch Fighting in Muay Thai Boxing allows the combatant to employ numerous powerful strikes from this position mainly the knees and elbows which can end the fight quickly. Karate Karate is a striking art that was developed on the island of Okinawa. Karate which means "empty-hand", usually involves striking with the hands and feet to defeat an opponent. The students usually practice hard physical training to develop their technical fight skills. This training usually requires arduous strenuous physical and mental discipline. Karate as a discipline enables one to develop a strong character and also results in the combatant feeling respect towards others. The Style of Karate is useful for all people and can be practiced by men women and children. In terms of its application in mixed martial arts, Karate is almost without equal. Due to the fact that it is a highly dynamic discipline it enables development of balance and develops coordination and agility. There are many different styles of Karate. The most recognizable being Shotokan which relies on power and speed. However what must be remembered is that in the MMA world, the karate combatant has to slightly modify his style. This is because in Karate the combatant needs to hold his guard higher and alter his stance to avoid the takedowns. Boxing Boxing is sometimes is referred to as "the manly art of self-defense," is a striking art where two competitors try to punch each other with their fists whilst trying to avoid being hit. In Boxing competition is divided into 3 minute rounds with 1-minute rest periods between rounds. The growth of boxing has been staggering in the past centaury. Its usage in mixed martial arts cannot be understated as it forms an integral part of a competitor's arsenal. However, in mixed martial arts, certain techniques of boxing do need to be modified in order for it to be used successfully. Some of these include the Boxing Stance, Blocking, and Slipping punches. |
